Insights from My Journey in Project Management
I’m excited to share my journey as a creative leader in project management, reflecting on the lessons I've learned along the way. In an ever-evolving world, resilience, adaptability, sustainability, and continuous learning have been my guiding principles.
Each step has reinforced the idea that project management, at its best, is about finding harmony between strategic direction and the human side of leadership.
Learning Resilience Through Change
Starting in the cosmetics industry as a young leader and newly minted chemical engineer, I was both excited and uncertain. My first major project—developing a line of skincare products—was exhilarating as ignited my passion for innovation and product development. Yet when I moved to a new country, the stakes felt even higher. I suddenly had to navigate a world of new cultural norms, learn new language, understand unfamiliar market dynamics, and adapt to different work styles. It was a lot to take in, and I felt out of my comfort zone. But those early days taught me that resilience isn’t just bouncing back; it’s also about evolving in real time. Adapting wasn’t easy, but each experience made me stronger and more confident in my ability to lead.
I had the chance to work as a consultant and product developer in the food industry, an experience that opened my eyes to the intricate process of bringing a concept to life. I was able to shape products from scratch, transforming initial ideas into tangible items ready for the shelves. This role taught me the vital importance of listening deeply—to customers, market trends, and every stage of the product life cycle. When I transitioned to pharma, this insight proved invaluable. Moving into pharmaceuticals was a leap, yet my background in product development allowed me to understand the vital role of innovation balanced with regulation—a theme that resonates strongly in the healthcare space.
Project Management in the Pharma World
My experience in product development gave me a unique lens as I transitioned to project management, where strategy, organization, and adaptability are critical. At Apotex, I had the opportunity to lead a major project focused on achieving Elemental Impurity Q3D compliance with Health Canada and FDA. This experience was an incredible lesson in resilience and problem-solving, as the project involved constantly evolving regulatory requirements. The ability to pivot and find new solutions kept us on track, and it was rewarding to see the impact of our work on both the company and the industry.
Sustainability and Patient Safety: Core Values in My Work
Sustainability has always guided my work. At Sanofi, I joined initiatives focused on reducing waste while maintaining regulatory compliance, discovering that sustainable practices made our projects efficient and meaningful. Our team took pride in knowing we were contributing to something lasting.
Sanofi also introduced me to patient safety through pharmacovigilance and product surveillance, where every decision, no matter how small, directly impacted patient health. This responsibility underscored the importance of compliance and process improvement, reshaping my approach to project management with a focus on values that truly matter.
Growing as a Leader
Over the years, I’ve learned that effective leadership requires adapting to the unique needs of each team. Early in my career, I took a hands-on approach, closely guiding projects to ensure smooth execution. As I gained experience and began applying project management frameworks and tools, I recognized the importance of granting my team more autonomy and supporting their career paths through mentorship. Embracing their ideas and encouraging ownership not only empowered them but also sparked innovative thinking. At Fresenius Kabi, this approach proved invaluable; by allowing team members more flexibility, we not only boosted productivity but also developed creative solutions that enhanced our regulatory submission process.
Lifelong Learning: The Heart of My Career
Project management is constantly evolving, and continuous learning has been my constant guide. My journey has included invaluable experiences as a consultant for Biotalent and in major projects shaping the future of our industry. Through mentoring with PMI, I have the privilege of guiding others, passing on what I’ve learned while gaining fresh perspectives from those newer to the field.
Project management is an ever-evolving field, and the drive to keep learning has been a constant in my career. From industry events to in-depth certifications, I’ve seized every opportunity to sharpen my skills, actively practicing project management principles, adapting frameworks, and integrating tools to navigate today’s dynamic regulatory landscapes. Embracing advancements like AI and digital transformation has kept me aligned with evolving compliance standards, while staying curious and open to new insights keeps my work fresh and resilient.
Giving back
As I reflect on my journey, giving back through volunteering has added significant meaning, particularly through my work with the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. Contributing to cancer research initiatives fuels my passion for healthcare and connects me with a community committed to making a difference. This experience has enriched my holistic leadership style and deepened my belief in collaboration, compassion, and the fundamental principles of thoughtful project management.
Looking Ahead
As I look forward, my goal is to create environments where teams feel empowered, where sustainability is integral, and where patient safety is prioritized. Project management isn’t just about deliverables; it’s about fostering growth, sparking creativity, and building a collaborative spirit among team members.
Whether you’re a young professional or a seasoned leader, I believe we all have the capacity to adapt and thrive in this ever-changing landscape.
